Vintage Necklaces

The durability of vintage gold plating depends on the thickness of the coating and how it is cared for. Our vintage necklaces are crafted with a special tarnish-resistant coating to help preserve their antique-inspired finish, making them less prone to fading or discolouration compared to typical gold-plated pieces.We recommend avoiding regular contact with sweat, perfume, chemicals (such as toiletries), or humid environments. All of which can affect the delicate plating over time.

We recommend avoiding prolonged contact with water and wiping with a soft cloth after wearing. When storing, we suggest wrapping in a sealed bag or flannel to reduce air oxidation to prolong the colour retention time.

Copper itself may cause reactions (e.g. redness, itching) to some sensitive skin. Our necklaces are designed to be anti-allergic (extra rhodium or nickel-free plating process) and the risk is low. Sensitive skin is advised to shorten the wearing time or choose pure gold/silver.

Vintage necklaces are often artificially oxidised and polished to create an aged effect, rather than worn naturally. The design is to highlight the vintage style and will not affect the wearability.

Not recommended. The chlorine in water, shampoo and swimming pools will accelerate the removal of the plating and oxidise the copper.

• Weight: Copper plated gold is lighter than pure gold.
• Magnetism: Pure gold is non-magnetic and copper plated gold is usually non-magnetic, but the internal metal may contain other alloys.
• Markings: Pure gold will be stamped ‘24K’, ‘18K’, etc. Copper plated gold may be marked ‘GP’ (Gold Plated) or ‘GF Copper-plated gold may be labelled ‘GP’ (gold-plated) or ‘GF’ (gold-filled).

The warm tones of gold -plated are suitable for earthy colours and vintage style clothing (e.g. bohemian, Victorian), and can be layered with other gold coloured jewellery to enhance the layered look, but avoid rubbing directly against silver jewellery.

1. Ask about the thickness of the gold plating (in microns), the thicker the more durable it is.
2. Choose a workmanship with a smooth, burr-free bottom layer of copper.
3. Give preference to those with anti-allergy plating (e.g. rhodium plating).

Choosing the right length depends on your neck size, personal style, and the type of neckline you usually wear. Standard lengths are (choker) 16 inches , (collarbone) 18 inches , (mid-chest) 20-24 inches , and (statement piece) 30 inches or longer .

Our pearl vintage necklaces will use natural freshwater pearls, cultured pearls or high quality man-made pearls (such as Swarovski pearls or shell pearls). The exact material will be labelled in the product details. Natural pearls are usually more precious, while man-made pearls have an even lustre and are more suitable for daily wear.

• Natural pearls: long-term exposure to sweat, cosmetics or sunlight may cause the surface lustre to darken, and regular maintenance is required.
• Artificial pearls: generally not easy to fade, but the plating may be damaged by friction or chemicals.
• It is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or chemicals, and wipe with a soft cloth after wearing.

• Gently wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth (e.g. eyeglasses cloth), avoid soaking or using ultrasonic cleaners.
• Natural pearls can be cared for occasionally with a small amount of olive oil to restore their lustre (caution should be exercised).
• Avoid using soap, alcohol or harsh cleaning agents.

Pearl vintage necklaces are usually made with silk thread, elasticated thread or gold-plated metal chain:

• Silk thread: classic and durable, but avoid pulling and it is recommended to re-string every 1-2 years to prevent breakage.
• Stretchy thread: easy to wear, but may loosen in the long term.
• Metal chain: stronger, but need to prevent the pearl and metal friction.

It is not recommended. Water may damage the layer of pearls (especially natural pearls) and cause the thread to deteriorate or the metal fittings to rust. It is recommended to remove them when swimming, bathing or exercising.

• Friction test: Two natural pearls feel gritty when gently rubbed together, while artificial pearls are smooth.
• Temperature perception: natural pearls are cool and warm to the touch, while plastic pearls are lighter and have a ‘plastic feel’.
• Lustre observation: natural pearls have a soft lustre and strong sense of hierarchy, artificial pearls may be too uniform. 11.
